Blue Spruce Reading Program

Every winter, the children in Kindergarten and in Grades 1, 2 and 3 visit the library on a weekly basis to listen to and carry out activities based on each of the ten picture storybooks nominated for the Blue Spruce prize.
Then comes the vote. Each child is given a small voting token, and must vote for their favourite picture storybook by placing their token in the can labeled with a picture of the cover of their favourite book. We count and graph the tokens by class before tallying and submitting our results to the Ontario Library Association.
I have loved many, many of the books nominated in past years. Among these I remember with particular fondness Suki’s Kimono, Courage to Fly, Drumheller Dinosaur Dance (we created quite a ruckus as we chanted this one!), Stanley’s Party (oh, the look on poor Stanley’s face when his people came home), Stella Princess of the Sky, and Mile High Apple Pie.
I have read and love three of the books nominated this year, Earth to Audrey, Scaredy Squirrel and Stanley’s Wild Ride. Good thing I don’t have a vote; I could never decide among these!
