Please, Louise! by Frieda Wishinsky and Marie-Louise Gay
![]()
Poor Jake simply wants to read his book but his little sister, Louise, has other ideas. She dances into his room, plays with his toys, and bounces on his bed. When Jake becomes frustrated and announces that he’s going to leave and she won’t be able to find him, Louise retorts that he can change his name, and disguise his voice and his face, but he’ll still be her brother. Locking himself in his bedroom only provokes Louise to stomp her feet, and pound on the door, and sing. So Jake grabs his book and runs outside, but his little sister’s right behind him. She snuggles next to him under a tree and promises she’ll be quiet and let him read his book, but, of course, there is no ignoring her. Closing his eyes in annoyance, Jake wishes Louise were a dog. When he reopens his eyes, his little sister has disappeared and a strange little dog springs into his arms and licks his face. It is possible? Has Jake somehow managed to change Louise into a dog? Now Jake finds himself wishing, “Please, Louise! Please be my little sister.”
Frieda Wishinsky’s story celebrates the ups and downs of life with siblings. No one who has ever lived with a younger (or older) brother or sister will fail to chuckle at Jake’s determination to escape Louise’s clutches and her equally determined attempts to keep him from getting away! Marie-Louise Gay’s whimsical illustrations are the perfect companion to Wishinsky’s text!
