Buttercup’s Lovely Day by Carolyn Beck and Andrea Beck

Buttercup is a black and white dairy cow who spends a lovely day grazing in the fields with the rest of the herd and taking pleasure in everything that she discovers around her – the blue sky dotted with clouds, the rolling hills covered in tender, green grass, the creek that wends its way through the fields, the creatures that live in the trees and burrows at the edge of the fields.  When the sun goes down and it is time to return to the barn for milking, Buttercup delights in the journey and the farmer who walks it with her.  As her day ends, as “softly, slyly, sleeps slips in,” Buttercup reflects that it has truly been a lovely, lovely day.
Beautifully told in rhyming couplets by Carolyn Beck, and charmingly illustrated by her sister, Andrea Beck, this delightful tale about Buttercup, a philosopher cow, will have children smiling, and will remind adults to stop and appreciate the joy in life’s every moment.

  • My favourite lines from this book, and from Buttercup herself, the great philosopher cow, is:

    “It is so, so fine,
    To be bovine,
    To be a cow,
    Right here, right now.”

What a great attitude! Love Buttercup!
